4 Unique Tips to Care For Your Eyes

Many people swear by having a consistent bedtime and morning routine, with rituals that help them take care of their skin, their bodies and their minds. But, what about the eyes? Very often, eye care is something that gets handled reactively, instead of proactively. Incorporating simple eye protection, vision care and eye-focused treatments can go a long way in helping you keep your eyes in tip-top shape. Here are a few ideas.

1. Use lubricating eye drops

There are many factors that can contribute to dryness in the eyes, and this unpleasant sensation often arrives without warning. In order to keep your eyes functioning optimally and help with preventing eye strain, get ahead of dryness. Use preservative-free over-the-counter artificial tears in the morning and at night. You can also keep a tube in your bag for use during the day, if dryness creeps up on you.

2. Give surrounding areas some TLC

Many people use an eye cream as part of their skincare routine, which is great. But make sure you’re choosing products without harmful ingredients, and applying them gently. Some experts advise using the ring finger to carefully pat cream along the orbital bone that encircles the eye, since this finger is considered the weakest and least likely to damage the fragile tissue there.

If you find yourself experiencing puffiness around the eyes upon rising in the morning, you can also consider elevating your head with an extra pillow at night to keep the fluid away from your face. You may also want to consider cold compresses or an ice mask. Dark circles? Try using cotton balls soaked in rosewater to reduce them before you start your skincare routine. And once again, cold compresses and ice can constrict blood vessels and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

3. Invest in - and take care of - quality sunglasses

Of course, wearing sunglasses isn’t exactly a unique tip for eye care. After all, people know that wearing sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection from both UVA and UVB rays is essential for eye protection and that polarized shades are great too, as they reduce glare from water, snow, etc. But beyond these basic tips, there are a couple things to keep in mind.

First, make sure you’re selecting sunglass styles that completely cover your eyes in order to get maximum protection. Second, keep them in a case and take the time to clean them regularly. Protecting your sunglasses helps with preventing eye strain, since looking through scratches and dirt on your lenses can be taxing on your eyes. You can either use a spray and microfiber cloth, or grab a pack of individually wrapped on-the-go wipes for convenience; whatever works best for you and will ensure you’ll clean them often.

4.Give your eyes a break

In order to truly practice excellent vision care, recognize that your eyes work hard for you all day long. Whether you stare at a computer screen from 9-5, read printed reports, view organisms under a microscope, drive people around or engage in practically any other type of work, your eyes are constantly in use. Make sure to give them breaks from devices and periods of intense focus, even if your job doesn’t involve a screen.
