What is Tecnis® Multifocal?
Tecnis Multifocal is a type of intraocular lens (IOL) that is used to replace the natural crystalline lens of your eye during cataract surgery. This IOL is also able to correct presbyopia, a condition in which the ability to see objects in the near range of vision diminishes with age. Presbyopia is what causes many people to begin using reading glasses in their 50s and 60s. During cataract surgery, the cloudy, damaged lens must be removed and replaced with an IOL. There are different types of IOLs and they each offer various advantages and disadvantages. The type of IOL that is best for you will depend on the health of your vision before the development of cataracts and your unique needs and lifestyle.
Tecnis is a multifocal IOL that provides vision at multiple distances. This IOL differs from the natural lens of the eye, which flexes to accommodate vision at various ranges. The IOL is divided into three zones that provide focusing ability in the near, intermediate, and far ranges of vision. The brain quickly adapts to this new way of viewing, as it utilizes one of the zones to focus on objects in each range of vision. Tecnis Multifocals provide most patients with the ability to see well and read comfortably in all lighting conditions. Additionally, patients are typically able to transition easily from bright light conditions to low light conditions.
Most patients report satisfaction with multifocal IOLs and are able to see much more clearly after receiving them. About 9 out of 10 patients are able to see clearly without any form of corrective lenses, including reading glasses, after receiving Technis Multifocal lenses.
Candidates
Candidates for Tecnis Multifocal IOLs should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about their cataract surgery. Patients who do not have good eye health or who suffer from certain eye diseases may not find their vision much improved after receiving multifocal IOLs. A small amount of people may suffer from reduced vision in poor visibility situations, such as night driving. Patients who depend upon their ability to drive at night (such as truck or taxi drivers) may receive better results from monofocal IOLs. Your doctor can help you understand if you are an ideal candidate for Tecnis Multifocal IOLs.
