AcrySof Toric IOLs for Cataracts + Astigmatism

Patients who suffer from cataracts and astigmatism may require special lenses to correct their vision after cataract surgery. Cataract surgery and standard intraocular lenses (IOLs) alone cannot correct astigmatism. Fortunately, AcrySof Toric IOLs are able to provide a solution to both of these problems.

Patients with astigmatism suffer from vision problems because their corneas are not perfectly spherical, which can result in distorted or blurred vision. During cataract surgery, the damaged, cloudy lens will be replaced with an artificial lens (intraocular lens). AcrySof Toric IOLs have a unique shape. They are convex on both sides, which provides spherical and astigmatic correction after implantation. In this way, AcrySof Toric IOLs are able to reduce or eliminate astigmatism while treating cataracts.

Implantation of AcrySof Toric IOLs typically results in improved distance vision and reduces the patient’s dependence on corrective lenses. Most patients will still need to use corrective lenses for viewing objects in the near and intermediate vision ranges for activities such as reading and using the computer. An added benefit of AcrySof Toric lenses is that they are able to filter out harmful ultraviolet light to further protect your eyes from damage. Toric lenses are able to improve vision in patients with cataracts and astigmatism, giving them clearer and more vibrant distance vision so they can fully enjoy the world around them.

OptiPlus & Ora System

Detecting and correcting astigmatism has become easier in recent years with the introduction of advanced optical imaging systems like OptiPlus and the Ora System. These systems utilize wavefront analysis (the same technology used in modern laser eye surgeries) to detect irregularities of the eye and allow doctors to assess if their corrections have been effective in real time, allowing for optimization of the post-surgical result. During surgery, wavefront analysis can be performed to ensure that the shape of the cornea has been corrected so the patient will emerge from surgery with better vision. Thanks to this real time detection and correction of irregularities, patients are able to achieve clearer vision in just one surgery.
