About Dr. Chen

Dr. Eric R. Chen is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cornea, anterior segment, and refractive surgeon with expertise in vision correction, complex cataract surgery, and the full spectrum of corneal transplantation (DMEK, DSAEK, PKP). He also specializes in managing challenging anterior segment and corneal diseases.

A Southern California native, Dr. Chen began his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy-League Institution, where he earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and a Master of Biotechnology in molecular biology. During this time, he conducted cutting-edge research in metabolic genetics and personalized medicine, publishing in top journals including Cell and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, where he was elected Class Vice President and conducted ophthalmic research at the Cleveland Clinic. Following an internship year in internal medicine at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital, Dr. Chen completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Rochester Flaum Eye Institute, serving as Chief Resident and receiving multiple accolades, including the Surgeon’s Knife Award for surgical excellence. He then pursued fellowship training in Cornea, Anterior Segment, and Refractive Surgery at the prestigious Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine, one of the world’s top cornea fellowships.

Dr. Chen is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and the Cornea Society. His academic success has led to several awards, including the Young Ophthalmic Leaders Award, the Kirk R. Wilhelmus Research Award, the Silvia Orengo-Nania Fellow Teaching Award, the Snell Ophthalmology Resident Investigator Award, and the Ray A. and Robert L. Kroc Research Fellowship. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in ophthalmology and presented his work at major national meetings, including AAO and ASCRS. He is dedicated to surgical excellence, advancing innovation in eye care, and providing patients with compassionate, personalized care to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Chen enjoys performing music, exploring new restaurants, and spending quality time with his family.
