And in addition to produce, there are some other important nutrients you should make sure you’re getting, so your eyes can reap the benefits, too. Here’s a list of our favorite foods that are good for your eyes.
1. Carrots and sweet potatoes.
When you think of eating the rainbow, definitely remember to choose foods that are deep orange. They contain beta carotene, which converts into vitamin A and can keep your eyes from developing night blindness.
2. Leafy greens.
You really can’t go wrong choosing any green vegetables. But when you include spinach and kale in your diet regularly, you’re getting high amounts of the nutrient lutein, which has been shown to reduce the risk of cataracts. Both of these powerhouse greens also contain beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, as well, making them some of the best foods to improve eyesight and eye health.
3. Sardines and salmon.
Cold-water fish like these are well-known for being full of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for protecting your eyes. Omega-3s are great at fighting inflammation and improving cell function, so try to get at least one serving per week. Not a fish person? Look for a high quality omega-3 supplement to make sure you’re getting enough.
4. Green tea.
The overall health benefits of green tea have been talked about for years, but did you know this beverage also packs a powerful punch in terms of improving your eye health? Green tea contains a variety of flavonoids, which are antioxidants that help protect your retina from solar damage and even from eye diseases like glaucoma.
