Laser Eye Surgery Myths: Uncovered

It’s pretty common today to meet someone who has had LASIK eye surgery. It wasn’t too long ago that Jessica Simpson underwent the procedure on national TV. The procedure is becoming more common due to its huge benefits as well as the ease of recovery. Although LASIK may be more commonplace, many people still have concerns surrounding common myths about the procedure and its effects. If you’ve heard of any of these myths, get ready for them to be debunked!

Myth 1: LASIK is an Unnecessary Procedure

Although it’s accurate that most people getting LASIK eye surgery are doing so because it’s an elective operation, this doesn’t make it unnecessary. Given that LASIK can help to reduce or eliminate reliance on glasses or contacts and give them better vision and more freedom, it’s no surprise that an eye doctor might recommend the procedure. A patient who appears to be a good candidate for LASIK may find that while the procedure is not necessary for their survival, it’s a great opportunity for them to reclaim control of their own vision.

Myth 2: LASIK is Painful

During the surgery, LASIK is pain-free as anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye.  Following the surgery, the most common side effect reported is dry eye that can last for several days after the procedure. Although it might be nerve-wracking to think about any procedure on or near your eye, many people have already gotten LASIK eye surgery safely and report minor or no side effects at all.

Myth 3: It Can Take Weeks to See Vision Improvements

The majority of patients see improvements in their vision within hours or days after the surgery is complete. Not only will your vision improve within a short period of time, it will continue to improve for weeks or months following the procedure.

Myth 4: Most People Are Not Good Candidates For LASIK

LASIK is primarily for those who suffer from astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness. There are some anatomical features that may make it problematic for you to go through LASIK, but your eye doctor can tell you whether or not you’re a good candidate and what options are available to you. However, the majority of patients are good candidates for LASIK.
