Enjoying Summer Activities After LASIK

There are seemingly endless benefits to having LASIK laser eye surgery, but did you know that it can even improve your enjoyment of certain seasons? Given that it’s summertime right now, let’s zero in on how to get more out of your summer activities after LASIK.

Swim Without Stress

Ask anyone what their favorite activities are during the months of June, July and August, and you’re bound to hear this one: swimming! Whether at the lake, the beach or in a backyard pool, swimming is a great way to get some exercise, beat the heat and have some fun.

However, wearing glasses or contacts can make swimming more of a chore than a treat. If you wear glasses, you won’t be able to wear sunglasses on top to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays you’ll encounter while out by the water. Of course, you can wear prescription sunglasses, but these become less practical when you want to actually swim and still be able to see clearly.

Contacts are more convenient, but they still have limitations. For example, you must be very careful not to get chlorine (or unclean lake water) into your eyes when wearing contacts, or your eyes can become irritated–if not infected.

After you have LASIK, all of these frustrations are eliminated. You will be able to see clearly, wear sunglasses with UV protection when you’re out of the water or goggles when underwater. Best of all, swimming will become something you look forward to, rather than something you have to plan carefully around.

Hike Without Hassle

Hiking is another favorite summer activity that can be a bit of a headache when you wear glasses or contacts. For those who wear glasses, you have to choose between seeing clearly (wearing your glasses) or proper UV protection (wearing sunglasses). If you do happen to have prescription sunglasses, you need to make sure you don’t drop them or lose them on your hike, as they can be pretty expensive.

For contact wearers, hiking still has some drawbacks. If you have any eye allergies, for example, they can be exacerbated by being outdoors and further irritated by your contacts rubbing against your eyes. What’s more, if you get anything in your eye and need to put in drops and/or clean your contacts, you won’t have somewhere to wash your hands and do so in a hygienic manner.

With all of this in mind, it’s clear why hiking after LASIK is really the way to go.
