How Sunlight Affects Cataracts: Is UV Exposure Making Your Vision Worse?
If you’ve been spending time outdoors this summer (hello, Arizona sun!), you’re probably thinking about hydration, sunscreen, and maybe a good sun hat. But how often are you protecting your eyes from sun damage?
While UV exposure is well-known for affecting your skin, it also plays a major role in the health of your eyes — especially when it comes to cataracts. If your vision has started to feel dim, hazy, or more glare-prone in bright light, the summer sun could be making those symptoms worse.
What Are Cataracts, and Why Does the Sun Matter?
A cataract is the clouding of your eye’s natural lens, usually due to age-related changes in the proteins of the lens. But sunlight accelerates that process — specifically, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
Over time, UV rays can cause oxidative stress in the eye, which speeds up lens clouding and may contribute to cataracts forming earlier or worsening faster.
In Arizona, where we get intense sun exposure nearly year-round, the risk is even higher — especially if you spend a lot of time outside driving, walking, golfing, or gardening without proper UV protection.
Symptoms of Cataracts Worsened by Sunlight
If you already have mild cataracts, bright sunlight can make symptoms more noticeable:
- Increased glare or halos around lights
- Difficulty seeing clearly in bright daylight
- Trouble driving at night (especially with oncoming headlights)
- Colors looking faded or yellowed
- Blurry vision that’s not corrected by glasses
3 Ways to Protect Your Eyes From UV Damage
Even if you haven’t been diagnosed with cataracts, it’s smart to protect your eyes now to delay or reduce their development:
- Wear UV-Blocking Sunglasses
Look for sunglasses labeled “100% UVA/UVB protection” or “UV400.” Bonus if they’re polarized — which cuts glare and makes driving, golf, or other outdoor activities easier.
- Use a Wide-Brimmed Hat
Shading your eyes can reduce the amount of light that reaches them from above or from the sides — especially helpful when combined with sunglasses.
- Schedule Regular Eye Exams
Early cataracts can be managed with updated glasses and sun protection, but advanced cataracts typically require surgery. An exam with one of our doctors can catch changes early and help you plan ahead.
