What to Look for When Shopping for Sunglasses

For some, selecting sunglasses is all about fashion and fit. But when you want to protect your eyes, there are additional considerations to keep in mind. To help you prioritize both style and protection, here’s a quick guide about how to choose sunglasses.

UV Protection

Harmful UV rays can damage your eyes and increase your risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. They can also contribute to growths and even cancer over time.

As such, it’s very important to put UV protection first when looking for sunglasses. Make sure every pair you think about buying offers 100% UV or UV400 protection, which means they block both UV-A and UV-B rays.

 Polarized Lenses

Polarization on your sunglasses essentially means they’re anti-glare. By reducing glare, these lenses also reduce eye strain. It’s a good idea to wear polarized lenses in many situations, especially when you’re participating in water activities (e.g. boating or fishing), when golfing or when you’re in snow. Additionally, polarization can reduce glare when driving, from other cars' windows, bumpers and so forth.
