Curious About Same-Day LASIK? Here Are The Answers to Some FAQs

Since we’ve introduced the concept of our same-day LASIK laser eye surgery, we’ve had a lot of interest - and some questions too. Some of the most common questions are similar to the ones we hear for traditional LASIK, but there are some more specific to this new offering.

To help you learn more about getting LASIK surgery by way of our same-day LASIK procedure, we’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions. Hopefully this will help you decide which surgery option you feel most comfortable with, so you can experience all LASIK benefits available.

  • Can I find out ahead of time whether I’m a candidate for the procedure?

Yes! This is a big part of the draw for patients with our same-day option. Instead of coming in for a LASIK evaluation, you’ll have a phone call with one of our qualified counselors to determine if you meet all the standard LASIK criteria, including having an uncomplicated prescription. The counselor will let you know if you’re a candidate for same day LASIK and you can ask them any questions you have about the logistics of getting LASIK surgery, financing options and post-op care. However, candidacy for LASIK is determined after the measurements are done by the surgeon himself. Then, you’ll schedule your appointment.

  • How long should I plan to be at your office the day of the surgery?

When you come in for the actual procedure, you’ll sit with a technician who will evaluate your eyes firsthand and do all the necessary maps and measurements, prior to you seeing our surgeon. These measurements allow the surgeon to determine candidacy for the procedure. If you qualify, then you’ll get a Valium to relax and will head into surgery. The laser eye surgery itself takes about 10 minutes per eye (or less), but you can plan to be in our office this day for about two hours (three hours max).

  • Is the procedure painful?

There is absolutely nothing different about the technology or techniques used in our same-day LASIK procedure, so the answer to this is the same as it is for all LASIK surgeries. Prior to the procedure, your surgeon will place numbing anesthetic eye drops directly onto the eye and the area will be cleaned. During the procedure, you will feel a bit of pressure, which comes from the first laser that creates the flap. The second laser reshapes and recontours the cornea; however, the process is completely painless. While patients may feel what is described as a “gritty” sensation in the eyes after surgery, discomfort is minimal and can be mitigated by over the counter pain medications.

  • Do I still need a follow-up appointment?

Yes. Even though same-day LASIK spares you an in-person evaluation appointment prior to the procedure, you’ll still need to come in the next day for a follow-up in order to make sure your eyes are on the right path to healing. We try to schedule our same-day LASIK surgeries on Friday afternoons, so it’s likely your follow-up appointment will take place on a Saturday morning.

  • Will the results last as long as they would with traditional LASIK?

Absolutely. Whether you get LASIK on the same day you have your evaluation, maps and measurements done, or have the procedure take place on a separate day from all of that, you’re still getting the exact same laser eye surgery. As with all LASIK, results are permanent in most cases. As you age, you may experience some age-related vision changes (which can be treated at the point), but the vision correction you receive now should be permanent otherwise.

So, does that help answer some of your questions about same-day LASIK? We hope so. If you have further questions, or would like to schedule a phone consultation, please contact us.
